Wow, there are some great choices mentioned here.
It would take me days to amass a list of my favorite guitar solos and to break them down to five.....ufda!
Though I would like to add Nothing But The Blood off of Stark Raving Jams (disk2)--- i'm cheating a little as the solo wouldn't be half what it is without the drums and bass.
Every time I listen to this song it makes me want to jump up and say YEAH! _________________ "i know less that half of you half as well as i should like, and i like less than half of you half as much as you deserve" bilbo baggins |

| Yeah, that's a great solo. I like the solo in Chase the Bad Away and the clean, bluesy solos in the studio version of Ducktape Universe on the Uncle Duke Project. |

Isn't that from the Canal Street Tavern concert in Nov '01? That solo smokes. Other great performances from that evening would include Childrens Fantasy, Inseperable & Changes. |

I have to agree wholeheartedly that the solo on Salvation Army Band is great! Besides S.A.B. is my ultimate favorite anyway. Also I would like to add the solo from the song The Seeing Eye on the cd 'Inseparable'. Thick, crunchy, and downright cool!! |

Oh yeah! somehow I missed the mention of the solo on 'Chase The Bad Away' Absolutely Phil's best solo on a cd! I don't know how I could have forgotten that one!! right on! |

| Wow--it's been a long time since I looked at this thread. I'm listening to Find Me In These Fields and Phil's solo on "Carry On" is great. It's straight-forward and rockin'! |

So many to choose from.
A few off the top of my head- the one in "Do Lord" from 11-12-01 (it is on SRJ, the "Trilogy"). The one from his concert on 12-22-79 (I've seen this listed as 12-21-79 as well) where he does a medley of some of his songs. It is about 10 minutes long and he does the Woody Woodpecker laugh on guitar at the end. In fact, the acoustic solo that opens this show is superb. I think this show took place before he started using looping equipment but you almost wouldn't know it by listening to it.
As far as concerts go, all the solos from 4-29-78 are great. In fact, I made a compilation on a cd of just the guitar solos from this show. Fun to listen to just the solos. They range from 30 sec. to over 5 min.
The solos from Glass Harp 3-10-71 are incredible as well as 3-24-71.
I'll think of some more later. |

| Woody Woodpecker huh? That's awesome. I love Phil's sense of humor. When I put my initial list together long ago I think I was basing it solely on technique and length. I would add Phil's solo work on "Cherish The Moment" to the list. I just listened to it again and it has to be one of his best "in the studio" solos. It's not very long but it's quite beautiful. |
