Long time Keaggy friend and outstanding musician Phil Madeira has released his new solo CD, "Off Kilter". At present the only way to order the CD is from Phil himself. Phil does everything on this one, folks, not just the B3 :)

In Phil's own words:

"I would call the album Contemporary Folk, a la Bruce Cockburn, Dylan, Emmy Lou Harris... Some of it rocks, so don't get me wrong... There's NO B-3 on the record! Can you believe it?!"

Here's a review:

As gentle and honest an album as you'll hear this year, Phil Madeira has crafted a work of tender beauty. Off Kilter tingles your ears with it's lazy guitar playing but is far from easy listening in any kind of Neil Diamond way. It is so saturated with musical delights that you will never be allowed to drift into sleep. It will grab your attention and never let it go. Madeira of course is Mr. Session Musician in the Nashville CCM scene, I challenge you to find five albums in your collection where the omnipresent one hasn't played on, and so quality was inevitable. Still I was not ready for how good a, rare, solo album from Phil would be. Beginning with the Lanoisesque mood of Jagged Heart and moving through Dylan, Cockburn and John Prine as reference points Madeira takes us on a songwriting ride through his spiritual journey. As the man himself says: "I've been carving, stripping back the bark, rounding off the edges of a jagged heart." Gorgeous. An album of the year. A career work.

All from the man who brought you great songs like Struck By the Love and Everywhere I Look!!

Just in case you're not familiar with Phil, he's worked for many years with Phil Keaggy and other well known types.

THE NEWS (22 April 1998)

Phil just returned from Scotland, where he has been producing a Celtic Christian band called "The Electrics", a great group of guys. He had a good time tracking the usual rock stuff and then bagpipes, etc! It'll be released this summer on 5 Minute Walk.

No news on the re-release of Emerging.

Phil played in January on the new Neville Brothers record. Had a ball, didn't do much B-3, as Art Neville handled most of it. He did 2 songs. The rest of the work was a blast- Lap steel, Accordian, dobro, guitar... kitchen sink.

Derri and Phil are still working on their project. Phil also mixed his new record "Three Horseshoes", and is about to master it, then shop a deal for it.

Recently worked on a surf record for Terry Taylor with various artists. Keaggy played on that as well. (He also did a scortching solo on the Electrics' record).

Who Helped and the Gear Used

Primary guitar: Telecaster Thinline, usually bridge pickup. Also, Epiphone Emporer, Gibson Les Paul Goldtop with P-90 pickups, Fender Stratocaster, Regent Atchtop electric, National resonator (1930s), Gibson L-1 acoustic, Italian accordians, Fender bass with Jazz pickups.

Dave Perkins from Chagall Guevara and Kenny Meeks (a longtime member of my band) sang some harmonies, and drums were done interactively with Charlie Morgan, Keith LeBlanc, and Christer Jansson; Phil helped...

Recorded with almost 1 mic, an Audio Technica 4033-- fantastic mic, and although its got 24 tracks of Adat, it's mostly on 16... very spacious, and uncluttered.

Phil's own comments:

JAGGED HEART-
"I've been carving, stripping back the bark rounding off the edges of a jagged heart"

A reflection of my personal can of worms- good and bad. You should never apologise for who you ARE; of course, if you're anything like me, you find yourself apologising frequently for the things you DO.

Recorded to a simple drum loop; Telecaster with a tremolo pedal.

DIESEL-
"I am on a train this morning rocking in and out of sleep, shaking, waking without warning; miles to go before I weep. And the only thing that's real is the motion of the wheel rushing passengers like me to uncertain destiny"

This is about innocence lost, and the passing of time.

Double-tracked Gibson L-1 acoustic, Fender bass with a felt pick, and accordian. The one pure folk tune on the record.

FRANCINE-
"The closer we got, the more your eyes shut Francine, you're as dead as they come."

Definitely in Bob Dylan's footsteps, the topic is adultery and the residual payments incurred. I wrote it about a close friend's affair, but I thought writing in the first person would bring it all the way home. Thankfully, I've got a great marriage, and have not gone the way my heart would sometimes like to go. Third Chapter of Solomon's Proverbs...

L-1, Telecaster, and Les Paul (slide), accordian, BS & drums. Kenny Meeks, harmony.

WICKED JOB-
"dream big dreams, keep them in your heart til they burst their seams like the will of God"

I must've written this for my kids, or maybe for anyone who's ever held a job they hated. True story.

L-1, National (slide), Telecaster, bass, drums.

OFF KILTER-
"She's a little off kilter, 'cause her world's turned her upside down"

You never know what kind of personal history you're looking at when you encounter a down-and-outer. This is my obligatory blues number.

3 piece- Tele, bass and drums.

A GIRL NAMED HOPE-
"Nothing's carved in stone 'til the paint is dry"

If Paul Gaugin had grown up in Texas...

L-1, National (slide), Strat, Tele, bass & drums

NAKED EYE-
"I will freefall into your mercy backlit by this winter sky Like an unforgiving camera is the naked eye"

Life is pretty stark if you can see no further than what your eyes allow. Faith... on the other hand.

Telecasters, bass, drums, accordian.

FOOL THAT I AM-
"I will want you and long for you long as I can I will love you, my captor, fool that I am"

Love is relentlessly optimistic, even when it might be unrequited. If the Byrds hadn't used a 12 string, maybe they'd have sounded like this.

Telecaster, Epiphone thru a Tremolo, bass & drums, accordian.

THE SOUND OF YOUR VOICE-
"I long to hear you speak tonight Whisper healing to my life pull me far beyond the noise let me hear the sound of your voice"

'nuff said.

Telecasters, bass, drums.

MEANT TO BE-
"Lambs to the slaughter too stupid to know but somehow we wound up safe in the fold we were meant to be"

It's amazing what a relationship can endure, and once in awhile, you gotta figure that if you're still married, you probably had nothing to do with that kind of success...

Thanks Keith Richards for teaching the world to play rythmn guitar! Telecaster, Regent (leads), percussion, bass & drums. Dave Perkins, Kenny Meeks and PM on BGVs.

JUST A WORD FROM YOU-
"The hinges are rusty and the gate wants to swing Just a word from you, and I will do anything"

yeah, you know what I mean.

L-1, Tele, accordian, Bass & drums.

WASTELAND-
"I was a snail when you taught me to feel... I'm remembering this and I thank God I am only visiting this wasteland"

A remembrance of the ongoing journey. Written on tour in Texas with Jimmy A, Rick Elias, and Rich Mullins 7/94...

Strat (leads), Tele, L-1, bass, drums.

Phil's influences and people he likes to work with:

Influences:
Los Lobos, Bob Dylan, the Byrds, the Beatles, Taj Mahal, Jimmy Vaughan, Phil Keaggy, Shawn Colvin, John Prine, the Band, Elmore James, Ry Cooder, everybody...

People with whom I most enjoy working:
Buddy Miller, Julie Miller, Phil Keaggy, Jimmy A, the Choir, Lost Dogs, Little Kings (w/ D Perkins, K Meeks, and Jim Foster), Lynn Nichols, a host of session players in Nashville, Phil & John, Ashley Cleveland (a smokin' band!), Vigilantes of Love, Ceili Rain, it's a long list!

Recently played a writer's night at the famous Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, in the round, with Amy Grant, Wayne Kirkpatrick, and Ashley Cleveland. (Ashely & Wayne are 2 fantastic artists in the Christian music scene.)

Some recognisable session players I've had the pleasure of working with include:
Lee Sklar, Michael Omartian, Russ Kunkel, Al Perkins, Tommy Sims, Gary Tallent, Kenny Aronoff, Phil Keaggy, Michael Rhodes, Chad Cromwell, Kenny Greenburg, Larrie Londin, Dan Dugmore, and Stuart Duncan, Gordon Kennedy, Buddy Miller, again too long a list.

I'm presently performing with 2 bands, besides my group, which is: Kenny Meeks- guitar or bass and Vocals, Dennis Holt-Drums, and Danny O'Lannerghty-bass, PM-guitar and Vocal.

Also- Ceili Rain- a Celtic Rock band with Rick Cua, Bob Halligan, Cactus Moser, Chris Carmichael, Hunter Lee, and myself (accordian). It's a blast, and we're close to a deal.

Little Kings- with Dave, Kenny, Jim and me- was formed almost by accident last year in Holland. We went over as solo artists in support of each other, and came back a band. We've cut 3 tunes, and who knows what'll happen. It's rockin'!

New albums I've played on:
Keaggy's latest instrumental; I play slide and organ. Steven C. Chapman- Lap steel, organ, Wurlitzer piano, synth, National slide... Amy Grant- we cut a lot of tunes, so I'm not sure what I wound up on; it was a blast-- she's a queen-- and the playing is great. I played B-3, unless they use a rough track where I played slide acoustic guitar. Susan Ashton-still unfinished. Tribute to Petra (?)-- Perkins and Lynn Nichols produced this zany project... out soon. The Choir- Steve & Derri are at it again. Great record; I played Chamberlin strings; like a Mellotron.

More new albums Phil's played on:
Up and coming Amy Grant, Vanessa Williams (B-3 and Lap Steel), Michael MacDonald (B3, National slide, accordian), Vigilantes of Love (Electric Guitar, organ, piano, lap steel, tin whistle, accordian).
