In a word--WOW!!! This was my 21rst Phil Keaggy concert and Phil just keeps getting better and better with every show! As far as I'm concerned, if I do nothing else while I'm here in California, today was still worth the trip!
Phil brought bassist Chris Donahue and drummer Ken Lewis with him for this show and the three just gelled on stage together. The last time I'd seen the trio together, they were really good. This time, they were ON FIRE! What a difference a dozen shows in five years can make! Also along for the ride were Phil's white Zion and his original Olson (I forgot to ask where the new one was--doh!).
The guys had to setup quickly and do a brief soundcheck in front of a decent sized crowd. People had come to hear the previous guest (speaker David Nassar) just so they could get a good seat for Phil's show. Phil started off on his own with the Olson and went into "Legacy". About halfway through the song, he gave a nod to Chris and Ken and they joined in to start a grand adventure! There wasn't a low point for the entire 90 minute set. The songs flowed well and extended jamming was the norm as usual.
The setlist:
Legacy (started solo and on the Olson with band joining in and
switching to the Zion about halfway through)
John the Revelator
Tell Me How You Feel
Amazing Grace
A Sign Came Through A Window
They'll Know We Are Christians Jam
Sign End Jam
The Blood (band takes a break and Phil switches back to the Olson)
True Believers
Can You See Me (band comes back in and Phil switches back to the
Zion)
Salvation Army Band
The show ended at 5 and now that the work was done, it was time for some fun! But I'll save that for another time.... In the meantime, check out my photos from the show.
See ya on the road!
