This was a free show celebrating the opening of the new Denver Seminary campus in Littleton. It was packed solid, 3,000 strong. The concert was held outside and the weather at the start of the show was just right. People had their blankets and lawn chairs to avoid sitting on the ground.
Because of the nature of the event, there were plenty of people there who had never seen Phil before. Some were associated with the college and some just didn't realize Phil was worth a $20 concert ticket ;). And of course, Philly didn't disappoint! We'd had a fine time catching up and looking at family photos before the show and Phil was relaxed.
He brought with him the 2003 Olson and the Langejans this trip. The first set was a bit mellower than usual, but I suspect Phil realized this wasn't his typical crowd. He was also more serious than usual throughout the show. But, it was a great show! He debuted two new songs, "Revive Me" and "It's A Good Thing We Love Each Other...". Very nice. The second half was more upbeat, starting out with "True Believers" for a change. He played incredible versions of "Nothing But The Blood", "O God Our Help In Ages Past" and "Salvation Army Band". And, of course, there's always my favorite part, "Image"!!!! Surprisingly, there was no encore. But Phil and everyone else were getting pretty cold by then, especially those of us sitting on the ground!
This was my parents' first Phil Keaggy concert and they were blown away! They said it wasn't at all what they expected from a "religious" musician. "Salvation Army Band" and "Revive Me" were their favorites and they were pleasantly shocked when Phil dedicated "Image" to me. I don't think it had sunk in just how much that dude likes me ;). It was an absolutely fabulous night and I thoroghly enjoyed every minute of it.
