Phil
Keaggy Concert Review
The Soiled Dove
Denver, CO
May 13, 2001From:
A bit after 7pm,
concert promoter Rob Marshall walks on stage and asks
whether or not Dave Beegle in anywhere in the
building. As Dave races to the stage and readies
himself, Rob states that Dave is the Soilded Dove's
second performer and they were fortunate to have both
their first and second favorites here tonite.
Dave begins his set with "All
the King's Men" and finishes by saving,
"I just wanted to start off with a bang".
The song "Malequenia"
follows. He then introduces "Sandie's
Painting" by saying that he and his
wife Sandie sometimes get together for artistic
sessions and Dave composed this song during one of
those sessions while she painted. [Talk about Music
To Paint By!] Next is "Simple Prayer"
after which his friend Aaron Lee joines him on stage
for "Big Fish Rumba" and
"Joy". For "Joy",
he pulls out an ebow and does a tip 'o' the hat to
Phil. Amazing piece. After a very big applause, it's
Phil's turn.
Phil comes
onstage and asks for another round of applause for
Dave and the audience gladly complies. Phil is his
usual jovial self all evening. He leads off his set
with "Fare Thee Well",
including the "Yellow Sumarine"
vocals into the soundhole. The audience is in
stitches. It's going to bee a great show! Someone
then insists over and over on "Full
Circle" to which Phil replies "ok,
but if you say it one more time, forget it."
Until now, I'd never heard Phil do this on the
acoustic before, but he did it quite well, even
including a few riffs from "Time"
here and there. After he finishes, he comments,
"that's a great way to break in a new set of
strings". Next up came "A Sign Came
Through A Window" and "Salvation
Army Band" both with much applause. At
the request of promoter Rob Marshal, he attempts
"I Will" and prefaces it
with "I will, I just hope I can...if you know
what I mean." After the first verse or so, he
runs into trouble, at which time the audience belts
out the words. Phil replies, "I've got the
words, I can't get the (ch)ords." After a few
more tries, he quips, "don't pass this tape
around if you're taping this." Next is "Shades
of Green" with all the bells and
whistles. He announces that it will on be on the
upcoming "Strings Attatched" release and
glugs glassharp.net "Chase the Bad Away"
comes next followed by "When Night Falls."
Next come two songs I'm not
familiar with, "I'm Looking Through You"
and "I Am Falling" (?) .
Then Phil says he'll try an Elvis tune, "I even
do this one in churches - and it's not one of his
hymns!". "One Sided Love Affair"
gets much applause. "Since we've had Elvis and
the Beetles together, let's have a runion of friends.
"Reunion of Friends" led
to "Celebrate" followed by
"Metamorphesis". "Duct
Tape Universe" has the audience in
stitches once more. I doubt they noticed a few missed
lines (he shouldn't have said anything!). The crowd
also loved "Just the Same and
after that, he wished everyone a happy monther's day
and did "My Auburn Lady"
in honor of his wife. He had trouble with the second
verse and said, "I do songs unreheased. Did you
ever notice? At my age, I don't mind making mistakes.":
A bit of JamMan work led to "Real Life".
"Not So Long Ago/Strong Tower"
was an audience request, as were the short inserts of
"Sweet Home Alabama" that
he snuck in. Next he gets going with his Bryan Duncan
impression and goes into an instrumental piece I
can't identify BN or AS? Another audience member
requests "Ryan's Song" and
explains that they had recently lost an infant and
Phil explains how he and Bern lost their son Ryan in
1975 when he was three days old. Phil then does a
beautiful rendition of "When Will I Ever
Learn To Live In God'" and finally
closes out the even with a fantastic (as usual)
"True Believers." All, in
all, a great evening. My only regret is that Phil and
Dave didn't play together. Phil didn't stick around
after the show for autographs, but he probably wanted
to get home to his wife :-)!
