Keaggy-L FAQ
(Frequently
Asked Questions)
This is the third edition of the
Keaggy-L FAQ. Do not confuse it with the Phil Keaggy FAQ;
this is a list of frequently asked questions regarding
the Keaggy-L mailing list. Your questions and comments
are welcome, and should be directed to Andy Luddy (who
maintains this FAQ) at ,
or to list moderators Stephanie Bargenquast (list owner),
Robin Eastburn and Rob Whitehurst at .
What
is Keaggy-L?
It is an Internet mailing list for the
discussion of Phil Keaggy and his music. (back to top)
How do
I get involved?
Point your web browser to http://www.pkfans.com/klist/pk-listserv.html and submit your e-mail address. Or if you
don't have web access, send a blank email to keaggy-list-subscribe@egroups.com .
What
are valid topics for discussion?
Of course the primary topics of discussion
should (and occasionally do) center around Phil Keaggy
and his music. Because the list attracts many fans of
guitar music, and of CCM music in general, discussions of
other guitarists, or of other CCM artists, are
acceptable, provided they don't get out of hand, and are
at least tangentially connected to Phil. Because of the
nature of the list (one person described it as being more
like a coffee house), subjects further afield often get
bandwidth, but please be considerate or others (back to top)
How
busy is the list?
There can be anywhere from 400-800 messages in a
month. This is spread out, with as few as 5 in a day, or
as many as 50! Things tend to be slower over the weekend
(because of the number of people who connect from work).
If the number of messages is a problem, consider the
digest or web/nomail version. (back to top)
Is
there a digest version?
Funny you should ask. To change your
subscription to the digest version of the list, send a
blank email to keaggy-list-digest@yahoogroups.com.
I
don't want all this email, is there a web-only version?
Why of course! If you want to stay on the list, but do
not wish to recieve any emails, while you are on vacation
for example, you can subscribe to the Web Only version.
This will allow you to stay on the list and read your
messages on the website instead of via emal. To change
your subscription, send an email to keaggy-list-nomail@yahoogroups.com .
I
am subscribed to the Digest or Web/No Mail option, how do
I change to Individual Emails?
We thought you'd come around. <G>. Just
send an email to keaggy-list-normal@yahoogroups.com .
Who
do I contact if I'm having technical problems with the
list?
That would be the list owner, Steph Bargenquast.
.
How
do I get off this list?
What? Was it something we said? Seriously,
though, to un-subscribe from the list, send a blank email
to keaggy-list-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com .
Is
Phil on the list?
No. (back
to top)
Can I
talk about the Hendrix rumor?
The rumor in question (that Jimi Hendrix
supposedly said that Phil was the best guitarist he had
ever heard) has been repeatedly shown to be very
unlikely, and tends to irritate Phil when it gets brought
up. No one will flame you for bringing it up, but it just
isn't true, sorry. (back to top)
Do you
have to be crazy to get in?
No. Insanity is optional. However, most list
members opt for it after a while. (back to top)
Who
runs this list?
The list was started by Ron Kneusel and who
originally developed the list's home page, The March of
the Clouds. The list's current moderators are Stephanie
Bargenquast, Robin Eastburn and Rob Whitehurst and all of
them can be reached at .
The home page for the list is located at www.pkfans.com , and is maintained now by .
Is there
some sort of initiation I should know about?
Ideally, you should read this FAQ before asking
questions, in case your question has been answered here,
and many people feel you should listen in a while on a
list before you begin posting, but that is by no means
required. Post away, friend! (back to top)
This is
all very cute, but is there a Phil Keaggy FAQ?
Peter Thompson maintains a FAQ known as the Phil
Phile, which he posts semi-regularly to the rec.music.christian
newsgroup. A slightly HTML ized (and slightly out-of-date)
version of this FAQ is available at www.museweb.com/keaggy/keaggy_faq.html (back
to top)
Is
there a Keaggy-L archive?
List moderator Ron Kneusel maintains an archive,
but describes it as "There is one but it is
unorganized. Consider it a work in (slow) progress".
In addition, FAQ maintainer Andy Luddy maintains an (also
disorganized) archive. If you need access to past posts,
try e-mail-ing one of these two individuals (see the
opening paragraph for their addresses). Yahoogroups also
maintains an archive, however it starts on August '99,
when the list was transferred there. (back to top)
How
long has this list been in existence?
The list was started in December of 1995. It
moved to its current location on YahooGroups in August of
1999. (back to
top)
Now down to some serious
weirdness:
What
is with all these abbreviations?
Please refer to "Phrequently Used
Abbreviations" at the end of this file. To sum up,
abbreviations on Keaggy-L fall into five categories:
album titles (some of these are nearly always abbreviated),
song titles, artists, standard Internet abbreviations,
and Keaggy-L specific abbreviations. Only the Keaggy-L
specific abbreviations will be covered in the body of
this FAQ (back
to top)
What is
OKC?
This stands for Obligatory Keaggy Content. OKC
is used to append a remark about Phil or his music (which
may or may not be germane to the remainder of the message)
to an otherwise off-topic post. (back to top)
What
else is OKC?
Still standing for Obligatory Keaggy Content,
OKC is a compilation CD of covers of Phil Keaggy tunes
recorded by members of Keaggy-L. For more info, go to members.aol.com/reastb4179/okc.html . (back to top)
Is OKC
anything else??
Well, yes, sort of (but this is the last one).
Standing (once again) for Obligatory Keaggy Content, OKC2,
now named Inspired, is a compilation CD of original tunes
recorded by members of Keaggy-L and inspired (hence the
name) by Phil. For more info, go to www.sacredsoulrecords.com/cdproject (back
to top)
What (or
who) is POP?
Phans of Phil is an informal name for, well, us.
It ordinarily refers to the P.O.P. badge, created by
Steve Busey, and available at http://www.pkfans.com/klist/pop.jpg, where it can be printed out free of
charge, pinned to your shirt, and worn proudly at Keaggy
concerts, as an aid to identiphying phellow list members.
(Assuming, of course, that you want to be identiphied). (back to top)
What does
BRT refer to?
BRT refers to the Back Room Trax, a series of (now
sadly unavailable) cassette releases, sold through the
Phil Keaggy Club, and containing Phil's home recordings.
There were 6 volumes, the first of which had been
previously released on the Nissi label as Underground.
The songs, many of which were recorded in Phil's basement
studio, ranged from demo cuts of songs that later made it
(or didn't) to an album to home recordings with Phil's
friends or children. They are, as I said, no longer
available from the PKC. (back to top)
Is this
Phil Keaggy Club affiliated with Keaggy-L?
Not in any official capacity, although many
people are members of each. For information on the Phil
Keaggy Club, or PKC, run by John August Schroeter,
publisher of Fingerstyle Guitar magazine, call 1-800-664
8482 (1-800-66-GUITAR). (back to top)
What
do "TECH" and "TAB" refer to in the
message headers?
TAB and TECH are added to message headers when
they are concerned with guitar tablature or technical
guitar playing issues respectively. They are used to cut
down on the effective list volume for those list members
who are not themselves guitarists. If your post is
questions about a guitar tab posted on the list or on one
of the members web pages, please preface the subject line
with TAB:. If you have any other technical guitar playing
questions, or are contributing do a discussion of such an
issue, please preface your subject line with TECH: (back to top)
What
*are* the rules for posting TAB here?
Other than including TAB: in the message
subject, there are no hard and fast "rules" for
posting tab to the list. However, a large collection of
tablature for Phil's Music, much of it created by members
of the list, is available on-line at www.museweb.com/keaggy/music.html , where it is maintained by Tom Loredo. If
you have tab you would like to see archived there, it
should be mailed directly to Tom
because Tom cannot guarantee catching if it is just
posted to the list. For tab to be archived, Tom has two
rules (based on an informal verbal agreement with Phil
himself):
1) No tab is posted for songs with commercially available
tab. (Tom has been lenient about this when the tab is a
short excerpt and/or differs substantially from a
published transcription, offering players alternative
fingerings, etc.)
2) Phil made clear that he felt the tab Tom has posted is
okay because it is of material that is already released
on recordings available to the public. The implication
was that having music available publicly on the 'net
before his record company could sell it could cause him
problems. Thus Tom will not post tab for songs Phil has
not yet released. (back to top)
What
is a loredo?
Now we're getting silly. A loredo, named after
list member Tom Loredo (a former expert) is a message
intended for an individual list member but sent to the
entire list (but, see aubin below). The derivatives are
endless. A reverse-loredo would thus be a message
intended for the entire list but sent to a single
individual. A half-loredo is a message to an individual,
but sent to the list intentionally, either because you
thought others might be interested, or because you lost
their address. An inverse half-loredo with a double twist
from the pike position is a silly comment made by someone
on the list, and doesn't really belong here on the FAQ. (back to top)
OK
then, what is an aubin?
An embarrassing, highly personal loredo is
frequently termed an aubin, for reasons which (in the
interests of decorum) we will not go into. (back to top)
What
about a Fay-delay?
This effect, named for Richard Fay of Australia,
refers to the appearance of reading an answer before you
have read the question, and is usually caused by
discrepancies in the users' time zones (which are quite
noticeable between the US and Australia). (back to top)
What is
this thing about lawn-mowers?
List member Neal Williams, a long-time friend of
Phil, called Phil on the telephone, and was told by
Bernadette (Phil's wife) that Phil was out mowing the
lawn. Neal mentioned this on the list, with the comment
that Phil was just this down to earth kind of guy, and
see, he even cuts his own lawn. Unfortunately, this
touched off _way_ too much discussion on how amazingly
down to earth and humble Phil was, and how uplifting and
wonderful it is to mow the lawn, and so on, and so on.
After a while, it finally stopped, and we all realized
how silly the whole episode had been. But lawnmower
references continue to crop up, largely as a means of
reminding ourselves how silly we can get. (back to top)
What is
the LikeMeter*?
Jim Bob humorously created the LikeMeter, a
means of visually representing an albums quality using
two matched parentheses, nine hyphens, and a caret. Thus,
a sore of 7 (out of 10) would be represented as (------^---).
"* LikeMeter is the exclusive property of JimBob
Enterprises, and cannot be used without permission,
unless you really want to." (back to top)
Who
is this Andy person, and why do people keep apologizing
to him?
Andy in this case is Andy Lazo (previously Asmus),
formerly Phil's road manager and sometime list member. He
posted an objection to the use of the word "Christian"
as an adjective, on the grounds that it was only used in
the Bible as a noun. Since then, people using Christian
as an adjective (as in "Christian book store")
have felt compelled to refer to it as a "Christian (sorry
Andy) book store". (back to top)
You
people think you're really cute, don't you?
Yes, as a matter of fact, we do. (back to top)
Why
can't you people spell correctly?
Iph you are rephering to the practice on the
list oph replacing every "f" in messages with
"ph", then it is a humorous aphphectation, and
don't phret about it. (Actually, we just have bad PH
balance) (back
to top)
What
is Vernors?
Vernors, which bills itself as the original
ginger soda, is a soft drink, somewhere between ginger
ale and cream soda in taste, which has somehow acquired a
permanent place in the mythology of the Keaggy-L. For
more than you want to know about Vernors, contact Mike
Fred at mikefred46@hotmail.com (back
to top)
What
are the Keaggy Awards?
Sometime early in the year (some years anyway),
we make up a list of award categories for on-list
behavior (such as longest thread, best thread idea, most
embarrassing post, etc.), and vote on recipients. The
winner in each category (where a single winner can be
determined, receives a genuine keaggy award, which
consists of a ASCII guitar with their name and award
category. (back
to top)
Does
everyone else on the list know Phil personally?
No, but it sometimes seems that way to me too (sigh).
Seriously, several list members have met Phil briefly by
virtue of hanging around at the right place before or
after concerts, and there are probably a dozen or so that
Phil knows by name, either by virtue of meeting them at a
lot of concerts, or through other channels. Finally there
are a few people on the list who are personal friends of
Phil, many of whom have known him since his days with the
Glass Harp. (back
to top)
What's
the story behind this recurring "Survey and Results"
thread?
This started with a humorous discussion of who
had had the most posts to the list in a given month. It
has since grown into a regular feature, with the top ten
most phrequent posters being listed, along with some
other statistics for the month. It is also variously
referred to as "Most Frequent (or Phrequent) Poster",
or "Rock the Vote". It has become more or less
official that a survey accompany the results, hence,
"Survey and Results". Please note that the
surveys included herein are neither more nor less
official than any survey you may wish to initiate
yourself. (back
